Orthodox Christianity is the religion of the Russian people and has been since 988AD, when Saint Vladimir of Kiev, Prince of Kievan Rus, decreed that all his kingdom should be baptised in the name of the Lord. Orthodoxy had been acquired from foreign lands- from the Eastern Roman Empire (ie the Byzantine Greeks), but in the ensuing 1015 years, Russia would place her indelible and energetic cultural stamp on Greek Christianity, harmoniously transforming nearly every aspect of Orthodox worship into the regal and triumphal Russian Orthodoxy we see today.

Brisbane was the first place in Australia to establish a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first parish church building was acquired in 1925. It was later rebuilt into what is now the current St Nicholas Cathedral Church in Vulture St Kangaroo Point.

Brisbane currently has four parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church with one being dedicated exclusively to serving in the English language, there is also a parish located in the Gold Coast at Tweed Heads and a mission in Toowoomba.
